Haiku # 18 Fireflowers

Bougainvilleas blaze
devouring air - I scream
drowning in wet bedclothes.

  1. While I've kept the 17 syllables, I've departed from the 5-7-5 structure of the traditional haiku following instead Allen Ginsberg's less restrictive "American Sentences" approach. Ginsberg wanted to couch the compression and vividness of the haiku in an American idiom. He felt that a strict adherence to the traditional form led to a kind of aesthetic stiffness.
